Bergwijn brace gives PSV 2-1 win over Sparta
Steven Bergwijn’s wonderful brace earned PSV a narrow and hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sparta at Het Kasteel on Saturday night.
Underdogs Sparta Rotterdam took a surprise lead on six minutes. A corner was cleared but the ball fell to Paco van Moorsel, who swung a cross in and Kenneth Douglas was on hand to head home the opening goal: 1-0.
PSV were made to chase the game. Luuk de Jong headed over the bar, Steven Bergwijn fired wide of the post and Bergwijn, again, had a shot cleared off the line.
Phillip Cocu’s men then found chances hard to come by but it was game on four minutes from the break. Steven Bergwijn unleashed a lovely shot that flew into the top corner: 1-1.
Steven Bergwijn put PSV in the lead ten minutes into the second half. Luuk de Jong laid the ball back for Bergwijn whose sumptuous strike from 25 yards out left the Sparta goalkeeper with no chance: 1-2.
Bart Ramselaar could have put the result beyond doubt ten minutes from the end but the midfielder mishit his shot from Joshua Brenet’s corner. Sparta flooded forward but PSV held on for the three points
