Messi completed hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-0 win over PSV
PSV have not been able to pull off a shock result in Barcelona. Mark van Bommel’s side worked hard and put in a solid display. They had some chances but the hosts produced some moments of brilliance in the final fifteen minutes to make it 4-0.
PSV knew they would face a tall task against the Spanish champions in Camp Nou, but they were well-organised and the opening twenty minutes of the match were equally contested.
The first chance of the match fell to Gaston Pereiro on eight minutes. A free kick was cleared; the Uruguayan was first to pounce on the ball but blasted his effort over the bar.
Steven Bergwijn had the second opportunity a few minutes later, after Coutinho and Suarez had tested Jeroen Zoet, but it was Lionel Messi who broke the deadlock in the 31st minute.
Barcelona had won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and the Argentinian stepped up to curl a superb free-kick over the wall, Zoet stretched to full length but did not stand a chance as the ball went into the right-hand top corner: 1-0.
Luuk de Jong sent a volley over the bar but after the break PSV were pegged back by Barcelona. The hosts dominated the game but PSV managed to keep their forwards quiet until the 75th minute.
Dembele doubled Barcelona’s lead with a stunning strike and Messi rounded three defenders before slotting home his second goal on 77 minutes. Messi completed his-trick with a clinical finish in the 87th minute.
