PSV and FC Groningen settle for a goalless draw
PSV and FC Groningen settled for a goalless draw in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the campaign. The Eredivisie champions finished the season with 83 points from 34 games.
Hirving Lozano looked to score a few goals and crown himself the Eredivisie’s top scorer. The Mexican had bagged 17 goals when the game got under way, while AZ forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh had 18 goals to his name.
At half time, Jahanbakhsh had taken his taken his goalscoring tally for the season to 20, while ADO Den Haag ‘s Norwegian striker Johnson had scored 19 goals, after he had also bagged a brace, at Roda JC.
The first chance of the game fell to PSV on the half-hour mark. Mauro Júnior found Joshua Brenet, who delivered a fine cross. Lozano headed on target, but Sergio Padt made a save to deny the Mexican.
PSV controlled first-half proceedings without creating any meaningful chances. Sergio Padt pushed away a Jorrit Hendrix header for a corner and FC Groningen’s goalkeeper was again called into action when he denied Mauro who tried his luck from long range.
After the break, Bergwijn found Mauro at the far post but Padt pulled off another reflex save to keep his team in the game. Pereiro showed his skills in the closing stages and turned provider for Mauro but the Brazilian wildly fired over the bar.
At the other end, Jeroen Zoet also made his mark pulling off some fine saves, as both teams settled for a goalless draw.
