PSV beat FC Twente in 4-3 thriller
PSV capitalised on their nearest rivals dropping points. Ajax suffered defeat at home against FC Utrecht, while Phillip Cocu’s side recorded a hard-fought 4-3 win over FC Twente in a thrilling, topsy-turvy game.
Cocu wanted plenty of pace up front and handed a start to Locadia as striker up front with the agile Lozano and Bergwijn providing support from the wings. Target man Luuk de Jong dropped to the bench.
The game plan was executed perfectly when Jürgen Locadia put PSV 1-0 up on fourteen minutes. Steven Bergwijn played him clean through and the in-form striker did not hesitate, putting the ball through Brondeel’s legs, his ninth goal of the season: 1-0.
Hirving Lozano came within inches of doubling PSV’s lead when he just could not connect with a cross from the right and at the other end Stefan Thesker headed home an equaliser from a corner on 21 minutes: 1-1.
PSV struggled to find their rhythm and failed to break down a stubborn FC Twente side in the remaining minutes of the first half.
PSV came close to taking the lead four minutes into the second half, but Marko van Ginkel’s vicious shot cannoned off the crossbar. PSV’s captain hit the post minutes later.
The fans were in good voice as Phillip Cocu’s side laid siege to the visitors’ goal. PSV were on top again on the hour mark. Bergwijn was pulled down in the box; referee Dennis Higler pointed to the spot and Marko van Ginkel converted the penalty.
It was a short-lived lead as Thomas Lam created some space before slotting home on 68 minutes: 2-2. Substitute Luuk de Jong ended his goal drought and the Philips Stadion erupted, but FC Twente pulled level again through Frederik Jensen.
PSV passionately kept on fighting to keep all three points in Eindhoven and were lucky when Thesker put Locadia’s cross from the left wing past his own goalkeeper in the second minute of added time: 4-3.
