PSV claim impressive 3-2 win over AZ after stunning comeback
PSV took a major step towards the Eredivisie title with an impressive win over AZ in the AFAS Stadion on Saturday night. Phillip Cocu’s side showed resilience to come from two goals down to secure a vital 3-2 victory.
AZ, opting for a 5-3-2 formation, pushed PSV, with Gastón Pereiro replacing the suspended Steven Bergwijn, back into their own half. Teun Koopmeiners had a great chance to open the scoring for the hosts.
Set up by Alireza Jahanbhaksh, the midfielder unleashed a shot but Daniel Schwaab made an excellent block, with Jeroen Zoet beaten.
PSV were starting to see a little more of the ball and Luuk de Jong linked up well with Bart Ramselaar, but the midfielder fired over the bar from ten yards out.
PSV dominated the game and created chances. Luuk de Jong was unlucky to only hit the post and thought he had made the breakthrough on 18 minutes. The striker headed home but had his goal ruled out for offside. HT: 0-0.
Luuk de Jong had the ball in the back of the net three minutes into the second half, but this goal, too, was disallowed for offside. Out of the blue Wout Weghorst opened the scoring for AZ on 53 minutes and he doubled AZ’s lead on 61 minutes, heading home from Jahanbakhsh’s perfect cross: 2-0.
PSV showed resilience and stamina and staged a brave fightback. Gastón Pereiro made it 2-1 on 74 minutes. The Uruguayan, superbly controlled the ball before slotting home.
It was all square three minutes later when Hirving Lozano tackled the ball off keeper Bizot and straight into the goal: 2-2.
PSV completed their comeback on 79 minutes. Luuk de Jong was hauled down in the area by Ron Vlaar and Kevin Blom pointed to the spot. Marco van Ginkel converted his ninth penalty of the season. FT: 2-3.
