PSV clinch 24th Eredivisie title
PSV produced another great team display to clinch the 24th league title in the club’s history. Phillip Cuc’s side recorded an emphatic and fully-deserved 3-0 victory over rivals Ajax in the Philips Stadion on Sunday afternoon.
PSV showed the absolute desire to win this game. The atmosphere in the Philips Stadion was electrifying as every PSV player fought for every inch of ground and closed down Ajax. They defended well and started an attack at every opportunity that offered itself.
As the first half progressed, PSV had some half chances. Ajax goalie Onona made a save to deny PSV’s striker up front Luuk de Jong.
The deadlock was broken on 23 minutes. PSV started a flowing move; Marco van Ginkel found Hirving Lozano who had his shot blocked by De Ligt, but Gastón Pereiro pounced on the rebound to open the scoring: 1-0.
The stadium erupted as the Uruguayan was mobbed by jubilant team mates. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had a chance to put Ajax back on level terms but saw his shot smothered by Jeroen Zoet.
Phillip Cocu’s side doubled their lead in the 38th minute, to the delight of the home fans. Pereiro played through Joshua Brenet on the overlap. The left back curled in an inviting cross and Luuk de Jong planted a firm header past Ajax goalkeeper Onana in the six-yard box: 2-0.
Ajax threw men forward after the break, playing a three-man defence. PSV looked for space left behind the Ajax defence and Steven Bergwijn capitalised on 54 minutes.
Santiago Arias delivered the cross. Luuk de Jong was surrounded by three Ajax defenders. The ball fell to Bergwijn who fired home PSV’s third goal: 3-0. And it was game over! PSV are Eredivisie champions!!!
