PSV returned to winning ways, six days after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Feyenoord. Phillip Cocu’s side comfortably cruised to a 4-0 victory over Roda JC in the Philips Stadion on Saturday evening.
Siem de Jong was handed a start
Cocu handed a start to Siem de Jong, who replaced the injured Marco van Ginkel. The midfielder, on loan from Newcastle United, was given the assignment to run up and down and boss the midfield.
PSV controlled the game
After a slow start to the game, Cocu’s game plan proved to be effective. PSV controlled and dominated the game and the deadlock was broken on 26 minutes.
Mexican opening goal
Moreno rose high to head home Guardado’s corner past Roda JC goalkeeper Van Leer. It was the tenth strike of the Mexican defender in a PSV shirt.
Siem de Jong doubled the lead
Siem de Jong doubled PSV’s lead six minutes later. Luuk de Jong could not connect with Willems’ deep cross from the left but his brother Siem was in the right place to tap home. HT: 2-0.
Carbon copy goal
It was 3-0 in the 62nd minute, with Moreno scoring a carbon copy goal of his opener. The Mexican midfielder Guardado took a penalty and his compatriot rose high above his marker to bury a superb header.
Siem de Jong converted a penalty
Siem de Jong was at the double in the 71st minute. Substitute Locadia was brought down in the box and De Jong bagged a brace, duly converting the spot kick.
‘The team responded very well’
Phillip Cocu told the media after the game that his team had responded very well to the defeat at the hands of Feyenoord last week. Read his post-match reaction on PSV.nl/english.
