PSV kept up momentum with their eighth home win in a row. Siem de Jong scored his fourth goal in three games to help PSV to a narrow 1-0 win over Vitesse at the Philips Stadion on Saturday evening.
One week before the international break Cocu handed a start to Marco van Van Ginkel, who had returned to full fitness, and in-form Siem de Jong kept his place in midfield. Bart Ramselaar dropped to the bench as PSV took on the KNVB Beker finalists from Arnhem.
PSV had a bright start and created some chances. The biggest chance fell to Luuk de Jong but Vitesse goalkeeper Eloy Room denied him with his legs.
Midway the first half, the match became a low tempo affair. Vitesse were well-organised and compact and PSV’s defence was not properly tested, either. Half-time: 0-0.
Siem de Jong made the breakthrough five minutes after the restart. Guardado picked out the midfielder with a cleverly taken corner and Siem de Jong blasted the ball into the top of the roof: 1-0.
PSV tried to kill off the game but when they failed to double the lead, they opted to control and dominate the game. Substitute Jürgen Locadia unleashed a vicious shot on 75 minutes but hit the bar with the keeper well beaten.
Room made a vital save to prevent Siem de De Jong from scoring a second goal and the goalkeeper pushed Van Ginkel’s effort away for a corner with five minutes remaining as PSV comfortably held on for a 1-0 win.
Speaking after the game, Phillip Cocu told the media he was not impressed by his side’s poor first-half performance, but was satisfied with the way the only goal of the match was scored.
