PSV reach last eight with 4-1 win over VVV
PSV booked a spot in the last eight of the KNVB Cup after easing to a 4-1 victory over VVV-Venlo in the Philips Stadion on Wednesday evening.
PSV took an early lead against FC Groningen and ADO Den Haag in the league recently but could not score a goal in the opening stages against VVV-Venlo. Cocu’s side dominated first-half proceedings but lacked the creativity to break down the visitors’ packed defence.
PSV had their best chance midway the first half. Captain Marco van Ginkel headed on target but VVV-Venlo keeper Van Crooij pulled off a fine save to deny him. Bergwijn sent an effort wide.
Rutten put VVV-Venlo ahead on 41 minutes. He rounded Steven Bergwijn before slotting home: 0-1.
It was a short-lived lead as Daniel Schwaab turned provider for Luuk de Jong Lang who netted the equaliser. HT: 1-1.
At first PSV could not find a way through the defensive blockade after the break, but Marco van Ginkel came to the rescue on 66 minutes. Substitute Gaston Pereiro delivered the cross and Van Ginkel’s clever goal handed PSV the lead: 2-1.
Lozano added a third goal with 11 minutes remaining while defender Isimat put the icing on the cake with a 90th minute goal. FT:4-1
