PSV recorded a hard-fought 3-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles in an entertaining and action-packed game in the Adelaarshorst in Deventer on Saturday evening,
PSV head coach Phillip Cocu named an unchanged side after the 4-0 victory against Roda JC. His team made a pressing start in the stadium with the expected electrifying atmosphere and created a number of chances.
But they failed to convert them into goals. Pereiro did find the back of the net on ten minutes, heading home from a corner, but saw his goal ruled out for an alleged foul committed by Moreno.
Go Ahead Eagles found their rhythm on the half-hour mark and Zoet made a vital save to deny Manu. Moments later Davy Pröpper went down in the box after Rochdi Achenteh had pulled his shirt and referee Kevin Blom pointed to the spot.
0-1 at half-time
Just like he did last week, Siem de Jong stepped up to take the resulting penalty and the midfielder again made no mistake, duly converting the spot kick. So it was 1-1 when the half-time whistle went.
But three minutes into the second half, it was all square again. Manu was at the end of a well-worked move and tapped home the equaliser from close range: 1-1.
PSV stepped up a gear and had chances to regain the lead. It was Luuk de Jong who put them ahead again, on 61 minutes, sliding in Arias’ low cross from the right, taking his goalscoring tally for the season to eight: 1-2.
Go Ahead went in search of an equaliser, while PSV could not kill off the game. Pereiro had a shot blocked on the line but Andres Guardado sealed the victory with five minutes remaining, slotting home from substitute Steven Bergwijn’s cross: 1-3.
