PSV suffer defeat against Ajax
PSV winning run in the Eredivisie came to end when they lost 3-0 at Ajax. Phillip Cocu’s side saw the gap with runners-up AZ reduced to five points, while Ajax move seven points behind the leaders.
Jürgen Locadia looked upset when he hobbled off the field of play in the 12th minute after picking up a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Luuk de Jong.
De Jong led the line, with Hirving Lozano and Gaston Pereiro playing supportive roles on the wings. Derrick Luckassen was handed a start in midfield.
The home side looked the more dangerous attacking side for much of the opening period. They dominated possession without creating any genuine chances until the 39th minute.
Ajax had a great goal scoring opportunity but Kasper Doberg sent a free header at the far post over the bar.
Jorrit Hendrix went into the referee’s notebook on 27 minutes, Joshua Brenet was booked seven minutes later and Hirving Lozano was shown a yellow card on the stroke of half-time.
Ajax took the lead with a goal from David Neres on 61 minutes. A clearance only fell as far as the Ajax winger who shot first time, sending the ball into the back of the net: 1-0. Lasse Schöne doubled Ajax’s lead just three minutes later: 2-0.
The game was virtually over as a contest when Donny van de Beek made it three in the 73rd minute, slamming a shot inside the far post: 3-0.
PSV will be next in action on Wednesday when they face FC Groningen while AZ and Ajax lock horns next Sunday.
