PSV suffer humiliating 5-0 defeat in Tilburg
PSV’s unbeaten run in 2018 came to an end following a humiliating and embarrassing 5-0 defeat against Willem II in Tilburg on Saturday night.
Jorrit Hendrix was among the away fans in Tilburg. Derrick Lucassen replaced the midfielder, who served a one-match ban. Hendrix’s absence would be sorely felt.
Willem II soon settled into the game and almost had an early opening on fifteen minutes. The ball broke to midfielder Ben Rienstra but Jeroen Zoet made a superb stop to keep it at 0-0.
PSV did not heed the warning sign and Rienstra, at the end of a counter attack, gave the home side the lead in the 21st minute, thirty seconds after Luuk de Jong had sent an effort over the bar: 1-0.
PSV went in search of an equaliser. Steven Bergwijn skewed an low effort narrowly wide and Gaston Pereiro had a great chance but Willem II keeper Branderhorst produced a fine save to deny him.
PSV could not find their rhythm after the break, either, Fran Sol handed Willem II a two-goal cushion in the 59th minute. The Spanish striker created acres of space before curling home the second goal of the match: 2-0.
Worse was to come and PSV had to swallow three more bitter pills. Björn Kuipers pointed to the spot following Derrick Luckassen’s handball. Fran Sol converted the penalty. Rienstra made it four and when Luckassen was given his second yellow card and sent off, Sol also converted his second spot kick: 5-0.
