PSV returned to winning ways, claiming an emphatic 5-0 victory against Willem II in the Philips Stadion on the warmest day in April ever. Phillip Cocu’s team ran riot in the closing stages.

There was little to raise the pulse early on in the game. Phillip Cocu’s team took control from the first whistle but could not create any chances of note in first thirty minutes.

De Jong and Pröpper had some big chances to open the scoring for PSV, but missed their shots so that Willem II stayed in the match.

PSV were lucky not to have conceded a goal on 36 minutes. Willem II midfielder Thom Haye saw a long-distance effort crash off the underside of the bar. The ball looked to have crossed the line but the assistant referee’s flag stayed down.

The goal fell at the other end. PSV took the lead on the stroke of half-time, with Isimat heading home Andrés Guardado ‘s corner from close range: HT: 1-0.

PSV doubled the lead from a set piece in the 56th minute. Marco van Ginkel rose high above his marker to head home another Andrés Guardado corner. It was Van Ginkel’s 14th goal in 24 appearances for PSV.

Gastón Pereiro added a third goal in the 76th minute. Davy Pröpper turned provider for the Uruguayan, who cut into the box and rounded two defenders before curling the ball past Kostas Lamprou. PSV ran riot against Willem II in the closing stages, with Guardado and Van Ginkel each scoring a goal in quick succession.
