PSV thrash Willem II 6-1
PSV recorded an emphatic 6-1 victory against Willem II in the Philips Stadion on Saturday night after a sparkling display.
Mark van Bommel’s side were left breathing a sigh of relief when Fran Sol, played in behind, hit the post on four minutes. It was a wake-up call and PSV responded well.
The half-time score was 4-0. A rebound fell to Jorrit Hendrix and the midfielder flashed his shot off the crossbar and into net to open the scoring.
Steven Bergwijn curled an effort into the top of the net. Gaston Pereiro sent Willem II keeper Wellenreuther the wrong way from the spot and Nick Viergever tapped home a rebound to open his PSV scoring account.
Sol reduced the deficit in the 46th minute but PSV soon restored a four-goal advantage, with Viergever at the end of a well-taken free kick.
The fans were treated to an entertaining game and celebrated one more goal, when Bergwijn headed home Angeliño’s cross.
PSV continued their perfect start to the season with a convincing and well-deserved win. Van Bommel’s men are on top of the Eredivisie table after having taken maximum points from four league games and reached the UEFA Champions League group stages after a 6-2 win on aggregate over BATE Borisov.
